Plunket College Seniors shine as Blackrock College retain Junior title!
In the absence of the all-conquering Coolmine Community College, Plunket College Senior Boys Team regained the Irish School’s Senior Team Trophy defeating their old rivals res Synge St. CBS at the Annual School’s Team Judo Championships on home ground. In their first match, Plunket College whitewashed the High School, Rathgar, 6-0, with Michael Bowes, Wesley Delaney, Alan Byrne, Adam Lawton, Jordan Taylor & Dylan Westphal all winning by Ippon. They had a close second match with Hartstown Community School, taking the first 3 matches, but losing the last 2, to win by the narrowest of margins. Both Plunket College & old rivals CBS Synge street fielded there full squad for the final in a bruising affair. Plunket roared into a 3 – 0 lead, but then Synge St. started the fight back, Robert Purcell & Conor McGovern leading the charge. In the final match, Dylan Westphal left nothing to chance throwing Dean Delaney for an emphatic Ippon to secure the match and the title for Plunket College. So after a 3 year absence, the trophy & Senior title returned to Plunket College.
Buoyed on by their first ever success in the Judo Junior Cup last year, Blackrock College were so determined to retain their crown, that they fielded 2 teams in this year’s competition. In their first match Blackrock A under the captaincy of Gavin Walsh secured a 4:1 victory over Plunket College, with Gavin, John Godfrey, Tom Suttor and Jamie Spring all winning by Ippon. James Tate had his only loss in this round, defeated by Plunket’s Keith Doherty by hold-down. They defeated a strong young CBS Synge St. Team in the next round to secure their place in the final. On the other side of the draw, the Blackrock B team were making steady progress winning their 2 matches 3:2 and 4:1 to meet their school mates in the final. The final proved to be a tight affair, with the B team drawing first blood, when Sean Brady held Daniel Hickie for Ippon. But the lead didn’t last long, as the A’s notched up 3 straight victories to give them an unassailable lead going into the final match, when Paul Moloney, scored a beautiful Ippon throw to pull one back for the B team. But it was a little too late, as The A’s secured the title for Blackrock College for the second year in succession
In the Girl’s event, Loreto, Cavan won the title for the very first time. The team was captained by Celia Ho with teammates Shannen Lane & Kotryna Boronaite. Well done girls!
A special word of thanks must go to Kevin Smith & the staff of Plunket College who made their school available to all of us on the day. They were so pleased with the organisation of the event, they have offered to host the 2010 event on Monday, 12th May, which we were all delighted to accept.
