Philippine Judo Federation Report

Judo Ireland Coach, Alan Martin has spend much of the summer working with the Philippine Judo Federation National Squad in preparation for the upcoming South-East Asian Judo Championships which will take place in Vietnam at the end of September 2010.

Marian 1st time Champions!

Over 80 competitors, teachers, parents & coaches, travelled from 18 schools throughout Ireland to celebrate this year’s School’s Spring Judo Championships.
Marion College, Ballsbridge hosted the Dublin Spring Judo Championships which was celebrating its 10th anniversary. Rising to the occasion, the students & staff put on a terrific event, as well as putting forward their strongest ever team which proved the depth of talent among the students.

11th Dublin Primary School’s Judo Championships 2008

10th May 2008.

30 Contestants from Dublin, Meath & Cavan took part in this year’s competition. For most players, this was their first taste of competition & they all rose to the occasion, with some hotly contested categories in all age & weight groups.

Maxim Tregub, St. Brigids NS, Castleknock, won the opening event, U-30 kg, U-9 years, with 3 straight wins against some very nice players, including runner-up, Warren Reilly, Killygarry NS, Cavan, while Bearach Gleeson, Scoil Mhuire took the U-34 kg title in the same age group.

Sarah O’Gara, Scoil Bhríde, Coolmine, was in incredible form, winning all her 4 fights by Ippon, and winning the Female Player of the Day title for the 3rd year in a row, while Hanlon Crowley, Killygarry, proved far too strong for all opponents at U-432 kg, U-10 years, winning 5 matches by Ippon & the Male Player of the Day title

Under-13 years, Adam Kelly, Sacred Heart, Huntstown, won all his 3 matches to win the U-45 kg category, while Laurynas Jousapaicils, St. Phelim’s, Ballinagh, Cavan won the heavier division in the same age group.

Allie Cherry, Lismullan NS, took silver in the U45 kg category, while Zoë O’Gara, Scoil Bhríde, Coolmine and Mantas Surgutus, St. Phelim’s, Ballinagh, Cavan took bronze.

Meanwhile, at heavyweight, Jimmy Kelly, Cushenstown NS, Co. Meath took silver with bronze shared by Lee Gibbons, Scoil Bhríde, Coolmine & Cian Goodrich, Farnham NS, Cavan.

A special word of thanks must go to Jessie, Paddy, Ciarán and Leon who manned the table all day & to referee David Kane who presided very fairly over the entire competition.
