Dublin School’s Annual Judo Championships 2007
Dublin School’s Annual Judo Championships 2007
At one of the most exciting & competitive School’s judo championships for many years, one very special player stood out head & shoulders above the crowd, Róisín McQuinn from Presentation, Kilkenny. With 7 straight wins, Róisín took the Junior Girls +57kg & Open titles as well as the Senior Girls Open title. She was also crowned ‘Junior Female Player of the Day’. Sarah Olwill, Loreto, Cavan, scored a beautiful Ippon to take the –48kg title, while Ashbourne’s Emma O’Brien won at –57kg.
In the Senior Girls section, Kaylee Cherry, Loreto, Navan took the –57kg Gold Medal & the ‘Senior Female Player of the Day’ title, while Lisa Egan, Ashbourne Community College won the –63kg, and Castleknock Community College’s Christine Kelly won the –52kg Gold & took Silver in the Open Weight.
In the Junior Boys section, Luke Kelly, Hartstown Community School, dominated both the –66kg & Open categories, defeating Keith Rogers, Coolmine Community College in both finals. In the Senior boys section, Colin Kiernan, Pobalscoil Rosmini, won 10 matches to take the –90kg & Open categories. Both players also won their respective ‘Player of the Day’ titles. For Colin, this was his record 6th ‘Player of the Day’ title, a record that I feel will stand for a very long time.
Coolmine Community College, the overall school champions from the Spring Championships earlier in the year were in blistering form winning 6 Gold, 5 Silver & 4 Bronze medals, amassing an incredible 49 points. Their Gold Medallists were Radion Murtazin –50kg, Aaron Keogh –55kg, in the Junior Boys & Carl Gallagher –60kg, Oisín O’Neill –66kg, Thomas Downes –73kg & James McKeown –81kg.
Synge St. CBS, finished with a very credible 20 points with Derek Kelly taking their only title at Junior Boys +74kg, with David Boxwell –41kg, Greg Moorehouse –45kg & Dean Delaney –55kg taking Silver Medals, showing their great potential for the future.
St. Michael’s College’s, who hosted the competition, under the guidance of their new club coach, Fr. Richard Eniji proved that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future winning 2 Silver, Colm Flanagan –50kg and Richard Lynch +74kg & 3 Bronze, John Pugh –45kg and Conor McDermott & Roger McGrath in the very competitive –66kg, from only 8 players. Congratulations to both Fr. Richard & his team on a fantastic display & on their opening of their fantastic school to so many others in hosting this year’s event.
The stars of the day had to be Mount Temple School, Clontarf, who took the place by storm. Their girl’s team won an amazing 4 Silver & 5 Bronze Medals at their very first event. Their courage & enthusiasm were a joy to watch with Roisín Dorgan –57kg & Sorcha Fulham, Open taking Silver in the Junior Categories & Kate O’Sullivan –52kg & Geraldine Keenan –63 winning Silver in the senior categories.
Once again, Wesley College, under the watchful eye of their coach, Pavla Handlirova, were very impressive, with Ben Doyle, taking gold in the Senior Boys +90kg and Rob McCarthy & Paul Kelly taking Bronze at –66kg.
Gormanston College, announced their arrival at their first ever school championships, with Elaine Tyrell taking Silver at Junior +57kg & Michael Lindström also taking Silver at Senior Boys –81kg. Gormanston College are the first school in Ireland to use the full-time purpose-built judo dojo at Garristown, North County Dublin, for their training. The new dojo is home to the Dublin School of Judo & under the direction of full-time judo teachers Alan Martin & Jessie Ho.
All had a super day of judo, and it was all thanks to the hard work & support of the staff & students of ST. Michael’s College who made it all possible. Also a special word of thanks to Mr. Tada from the Cultural Section of the Embassy of Japan, who once again came along to oversee the finals & present the medals.
