Judo Ireland Coaching Course
Judo Ireland Coaching Course
Judo Ireland hosted a very successful Coaching weekend on the 8th-9th September at Creaven House. Twelve coaches from all over Ireland attended. Topics covered included Diet for sportspeople; Rules of Judo as well as practical help and advice. Both Sarah McGillicuddy from Kyoto Judo Club in Cork and Oisin O’Conlain from Galway Judo Club gave excellent presentations on their coaching experiences.
This weekend also got the aspiring coaches onto the mat where they applied their teaching skills under the watchful eyes of both John Creaven Coaching Development Officer and Alonso Henderson High Performance Director both of Judo Ireland.
During the discussions it was observed that almost all coaches use the same class structure or format. Judo Ireland is interested in changing the teaching so that coaches develop a more fluid player with the emphasis on fun and enjoyment.
Each coach was interviewed individually and an interesting debate about the dual role of the coach as a player arose.
The feedback from the course was very positive with quite a number of the coaches asking that more mat time to be included in future courses.
All the participants were well fed and watered at the Galway Bay Hotel and stayed locally at a very pleasant B/B. All were presented with Coaching Certificates appropriate to their level. The next course is on first aid and will be held in Dublin on the 22 and 23 Sept.
