East Ireland Judo Championships 2007

For the first time in nearly a decade Ashbourne played host to an Irish Judo Championship. The competition was held on Sunday 29th April in the Ashbourne Community Centre. Nine clubs were represented on the day, Ashbourne, Cavan, Annaghdown, Wicklow, Coolmine, St Joseph’s, Rosmini and Merci Kwai Roscommon. The competition began at 11.30 with the junior girl’s -25 kg category. Ashbourne’s very first female competitor of the day was Catherine McGinn; she fought very well and secured herself a silver medal. The junior boys -25 kg category produced one of the largest groups of the day and produced the early excitement with some excellent fights, with Aaron Creaven of Annaghdown winning gold and Eoin Flynn of Ashbourne silver. The boys -50 kg was the largest group of the day with Carl Gallagher from Coolmine a deserving winner. Hubert Creaven of Annaghdown was on fine form on the day taking gold in the boys -60 kg and Open and silver in the Men’s -66 kg, and also picking up Junior Player of the day.

Rati Liparlelidu of St Joseph’s took gold in the Men’s -66 kg and -73 kg events and also performed well in the team event narrowly beating Mark McCarthy of Ashbourne in a great fight. Colin Kiernan of Rosmini was in fine form winning the men’s +90 kg, Open and combined Middle/Upper Kyu events although David Kane of St Joseph’s who fights in the Men’s -60 kg category made him work for his gold and took silver in the Open. Colin also went on to get the Senior Male Player of the Day.
The Annaghdown girls dominated the Girls event with Edel Canavan, Francina Kyne and Bethany Langham all taking gold in their respective weights. Claire O’Brian of Ashbourne got the gold in the Women’s Open and Senior Female Player of the Day with Francina Kyne getting Junior Female Player of the Day
There was an unexpected Team Event arranged towards the end of the day which saw teams being formed within each club. After watching the day’s completion some of the older more experienced players decided to join in on the team event. This event proved to be the hit of the day with players from all clubs getting behind their teams and generating a traffic level of noise and excitement and providing a great end to the day.
Eamon and Linda Fitzpatrick of Ashbourne Judo Club would like to thank everyone who participated on the day and we look forward to having you all back next year.
