All Ireland Judo Championships 2007

Another large entry from all over Ireland turned up in Maynooth University for the 2nd All Ireland Judo Championships in modern times. All provinces & all Judo Associations were represented at the Ireland’s premier judo event.
Alfred Browne, St. Josephs Judo Club, Fairview, Dublin was in incredible form winning 7 matches in Junior O81kg & Senior U90kg to win 2 Gold Medals. He was also rewarded with ‘Player of the Day’ title, an incredible achievement at only 15 years of age.
Once again, Annaghdown, Galway, had an incredible day taking 12 Gold, 7 Silver & 10 Bronze medals at Minor & Junior level. Among there star performers were Hubert Creaven at U66kg, his brother Michael U50kg, and their sister Marcella, Women’s Open. Francina Coyne won the Junior Girl’s Open & Kimberley Savage retained her title at U63kg.
Synge St CBS, once again led the school contenders at the National Championships under their P.E. teacher, Barry Finn, with Dean Delaney taking Gold at Junior U50kg. Aaron Brackett won Silver at U73kg, with Bronze going to Mark Coffey, U60kg, Stefan Triffo, U66kg & Richard Collins, U81kg.
Hazama Judo Club, Co. Down brought down a splendid crop of exciting young players winning 3 Gold, 2 Silver & 1 Bronze. Under the guidance of coach Mark Montgomery, I feel sure they will be fired up after this excellent performance.
Newcomers, Blarney St. Judo Club, Cork, made their presence felt at their first ever National Championships with Jason Tabb U60kg & Graham Duggan U81kg taking bronze. Other new judo clubs represented included Wicklow, with Darren Walsh taking bronze in the highly competitive Senior U90kg.
St. Patricks Judo Club, Drumcondra’s coach Jessie Ho was very proud of her charges with Joshua Byrne winning Gold, Jesse Hamill, Silver & Hugh Fenlon, Bronze.
Cavan coach Adrian Boyle was extremely happy with his players 3 Gold Medals, including Jordan Denning at U45kg, Feargal Moore at U55kg & his brother Joe taking the club’s first ever National Senior title at U73kg. They also won 3 Silver & 1 Bronze medals.
The west of Ireland clubs were there in force with competitors from Galway, Renmore, Castlegar & Ballygar as well as the dominent Annaghdown Judo Club.
Our hosts NUI Maynooth were also well represented with Ciarán Gallagher taking bronze with the big men at O100kg.
St. Josephs dominated the senior male categories with Rati Lipartelioni winning Gold at U60, Munkh Bold U66kg, Sergei Racovet U81kg, Alfred Browne U90kg & Jon Buciumas O100kg.
With plenty of students fired up, they are now looking forward to the Irish Intervarsity Championships in Dublin on February 17th, which will be hosted for the first time by DIT, while many of the school students will travel to Paris next weekend to attend the Tournoi de Paris, one of the World’s greatest Judo Competitions.
