Renmore Mini Mons

The Renmore Mini Mons were held last Sunday January 21st at Renmore Sports Complex in Galway. This competition is aimed at children with little competition experience and attracted a record entry of 120 children. While the majority of players came from Connacht, we also had entries from both Cavan and Cork.

For many children this was their first experience of competition and many of the events generated great excitement. Councillor Niall O’Brolochain, Mayor of Galway attended the event to make medal presentations. However, having played Judo himself in the past, he was persuaded to go on the mat and was subsequently thrown by one of the younger children in the competition.

While the Renmore Judo Club is itself only 2 years old it has amassed a haul of medals from competitions all over Ireland. That’s why the hosting of this little league event by Renmore was so rewarding. The new young players showed no inhibitions in getting to grips with each other. Another feature of this event was that everybody was treated the same with all the children getting the same prize. In attendance was the High Performance Director of Judo Ireland Alonzo Henderson 4th Dan who was looking at the development of Judo in the West. Alonzo a former Olympian is seeking to adopt the Galway model of development and to adapt it to the rest of the country. Without doubt he saw plenty last Sunday to be assured that Judo is strong in the West.
