9th Dublin Primary School’s Judo Championships 2006

50 Contestants from all over Ireland took part in this year’s competition. For most players, this was their first taste of competition & they all rose to the occasion, with some hotly contested categories in all age & weight groups.

Benjamin Moran, St. Pats BNS, Drumcondra, won the opening event, U-29 kg, U-9 years, with 4 straight wins against some very nice players, including clubmate Oscar Devlin who took second place, while Patrick Kurkowsky, St. Mary’s NS, Lambs Cross took the U-33 kg title in the same age group.

Female Player of the Day, Sarah O’Gara, Scoil Bhríde, Coolmine, was in incredible form, winning all her 5 fights by Ippon, while Hugh Fenlon, Pats BNS, Drumcondra, proved far too strong for all opponents at U-48 kg, U-9 years, winning 3 matches by Ippon & the Male Player of the Day title

Under-10 years, Brendan Mullins, Scoil na Mainistreach, Roscommon, won all his 5 matches to win the lightest category, while Gerald Olwill, St. Phelim’s, Ballinagh, Cavan won the heavier division in the same age group.

Zoe O’Gara, Scoil Bhríde, Coolmine, like her younger sister Sarah was superb, winning all 5 matches to win the under-11 category.

Meanwhile, there were 3 titles up for grabs in the U-13 age group. Jordan Denning, St. Phelim’s, Ballinagh, Cavan won the lightweight title, while Anatanie Munteanu, Scoil Bhríde, Coolmine, defeated Chloe Cherry for the U44kg title. However, James Daly, St. Patricks BNS, Drumcondra was in total control of the heavyweights, defeating clubmate, Robert Fenlon into second place & James Horn, O’Connell’s BNS into third.

A special word of thanks must go to Richard & Colin Kiernan who manned the table all day & to referees David Kane & Pavla Handlirova who presided very fairly over the entire competition.

Congratulations to all!
