Philippine Judo Federation Report

Judo Ireland Coach, Alan Martin has spend much of the summer working with the Philippine Judo Federation National Squad in preparation for the upcoming South-East Asian Judo Championships which will take place in Vietnam at the end of September 2010.

Marian 1st time Champions!

Over 80 competitors, teachers, parents & coaches, travelled from 18 schools throughout Ireland to celebrate this year’s School’s Spring Judo Championships.
Marion College, Ballsbridge hosted the Dublin Spring Judo Championships which was celebrating its 10th anniversary. Rising to the occasion, the students & staff put on a terrific event, as well as putting forward their strongest ever team which proved the depth of talent among the students.

Dublin School’s Spring Judo Championships 2006

The Dublin School’s Spring Judo Championships 2006 took place inCoolmine Community School, Coolmine, Dublin 15 on 15th March/.

14-year old, Ukranian-born, Alfred Browne proved far too strong for all opponents, winning Gold in the Junior +73 kgs, Junior Open, Senior U81 kgs and Senior Open categories. This incredible young player from Larkin College not only won 4 Individual Gold Medals, but also single-handedly won the ‘Senior Player of the Day’ title, far exceeding all other players in the under-16 male category.

Ashbourne Community College’s, Ian Byrne spearheaded their third ‘Best Overall School’ title with total dominance of the U-55kg categories & second place only to Alfred Browne in the Junior Open, giving him his toughest battle of the day. Ashbourne’s, Claire O’Brien took both the Senior U63kg & Open titles to strengthen Ashbourne’s dominance on this years event.

Coolmine Community College, hosting the event for the first time, finished a credible 3rd in the overall standings, taking gold at U45, Carl Gallagher, U50, Aaron Keogh & Senior U90 Palin Samphong. Neighbours, Castleknock Community College, won 2 gold in the Junior girls section, with Danielle Mongey at U57 & Junior Female Player of the Day, Moldavian-born Diana Sandu, defeating school-mate Ute Greene in the final of the U52kg category.

Synge St. CBS’s, Stephan Triffo won the Junior U73kg category as well as Silver in the Senior U73kg category. Marc Coffey, U55, Shariful Alam, Senior U60 & Richard Collins, Senior Open also took silver for Synge St.

St. Michael’s College’s, Scott O’Farrell won at U73 while Hugo Boylan, took Silver at +90 kg. Hugo also defeated Scott to take Bronze in the Senior Open.

Wesley College entered the event for the first time in their history & made their mark with David Howlin, totally dominating at Junior U66kg. Their coach, Pavla Handlirova is confident that their newfound enthusiasm will make then strong contenders in the School’s Team Championships to be held in Plunket College on 8th May next.

Drogheda Grammar School also entered for the first time with Heavyweight, Sean Willis taking Gold at +90 kg & Bronze in the Senior Open. Gaelcoláiste Reachrann’s, Cathal Ó Fainín continued his rich vein of form throwing Coolmine’s Brian Son for Ippon in the final of the Senior U66kg category.

Sandford Park made a welcome return to the event with Morris Epstein taking his first title at Senior U60kg, while his brother Jonathan took Bronze at U81kg.

All had a super day of judo, and it was all thanks to the hard work & support of the staff & students of Coolmine Community School who made it all possible.
