Dublin School’s 6th Annual Judo Championships
A super entry of 147 competitors from 36 schools took part in a fantastic day of judo at the St. David’s CBS Sports Complex on Wednesday, 16th November.
Competitors came from all over Ireland to compete for the titles. Many new players made their first impression on the Irish Judo scene at this year’s event, including Patrick Doyle, Riversdale Community College, Blanchardstown, who won all 5 of his fights by Ippon to win the U41 kg final and the title.

Synge St. CBS, brought a fine team of new players under the guidance of P.E. Teacher, Mr, Barry Finn & Judo Coach, Ms. Pavla Handlirova, who took home 3 Gold & 5 Bronze Medals. They also won both male player of the Day titles.
The Junior Event threw up some fantastic Judo matches, including the final of the Open categories, which put Ian Byrne, U50 kg Gold Medalist against his School friend Garrett Madden, U66 kg Gold Medalist, both from Ashbourne Community College, Co. Meath. Ian took this title with a superb Ippon throw in the last minute of the match.
The success of both these players helped Ashbourne win the Best Overall School for only the second time in the history of this Annual Championship. Other medallists from Ashbourne included, Emma O’Brien & Michelle McDonald, silver & Claire O’Brien, Lisa Egan & Daniel Maguire, Bronze.
Runners-up Presentation College, Headford, Co. Galway also took 3 Gold with Francine Kyne, U48 kg, Aisling Kelly U52 & Open.
In the senior event Richard Collins, Synge St. CBS was in superb form to take the U81 & Open Categories, while Darragh Lawless, Blakestown Community College, won the U60 kilos, newcomer Jeffrey Owie, O’Connell’s CBS, won at U66 kg & Cathal Ó Fainín, Gaelcoláiste Reachrann won at U73 kg.
Portmarnock Community College’s, Amy Stears, dominated the Young Women’s U63 kg & Open Categories & also took the Senior ‘Player of the Day’ title. While in the Junior Girl’s section, a superb display of control & skill earned Katie Savage the +57 kg & Junior Player of the day titles.
