World Judo Champion Coming To Galway

World Champion, Twice Olympic Silver Medallist and Five Time European Champion Neil Adams MBE will come to NUI, Galway on Saturday and Sunday 8th-9th October 2005 to give a 2 day technical judo session and to officially launch NUI, Galway Judo Clubs 40th Anniversary celebrations.

Neil Adams, who is an 8th Dan – the highest ranked judoka in Britain or Ireland, is widely regarded as one of the greatest ever judo players in the world. He is considered one of the best technicians, both for throwing and also for groundwork judo. His tai-toshi (body drop) throw is still one of the most unique throws in Judo and in winning his World title in 1981 produced one of the most famous armlocks in the history of Judo, rolling the Japanese champion Jiro Kase three times on the ground before locking the arm. It was the first time a non-Japanese judoka had won the World middleweight title.

This is the first of many events NUIG Judo Club will hold during the academic year to mark their 40th anniversary. The highlight of the year promises to be the clubs hosting of the All-Ireland Intervarsities Judo Championships next February, where the club will be hoping to build on the Men’s teams Bronze and Women’s teams Silver Medals which contributed to the 22 medals won at this year’s event back in February.
