8th Dublin Primary School’s Judo Championships 2005

57 Contestants from all over Ireland took part in this year’s competition. For most players, this was their first taste of competition & they all rose to the occasion, with some hotly contested categories in all age & weight groups.

Joshua Byrne, St. Pats BNS, Drumcondra, won the opening event, U-29 kg, U-9 years, with 4 straight wins against some very nice players, while Rhian Holohan, St. Ciaráns NS, Hartstown took the U-45 kg title in the same age group.

James Dervan, Gaelscoil na Cille, Ashbourne, got the better of David Smith, Crosskeys NS, Cavan to win the –31 kg title at U-10 years, while Conor Phelan, Pats BNS, Drumcondra, proved far too strong for all opponents at U-34 kg, U-11 years, winning 5 matches by Ippon. In the same age group U-39 kg, Michael McGinn, Gaelscoil na Cille, Ashbourne, took the honours.

‘Male Player of the Day’ Sam Boylan, St. Malachy’s PS, Coleraine, won all 4 matches by Ippon in great style to take the U-38 kg title in the U-12 age band, beating Eugene Leahy, St. Josephs BNS, Fairview, who was also in great form into second place. In the same age group, Fergal Moore, Corlurgan NS, Cavan took the U-43 kg title, while Alex Fennell, Pats BNS, Drumcondra, ipponed all his opponents to take the U-54 kg crown.

Dylan Donnelly, St. Josephs NS, Terenure, won the only U-13 title, which was U-40 kg beating stern opposition in Daryl Dunne, Corlurgan NS, Cavan & Shona Fitzpatrick, St. Mary’s NS, Ashbourne among others in a strong group.

Meanwhile, there were 3 titles up for grabs in the U-14 age group. Scoil Thomas, Laurel Lodge, Castleknock won two titles with Eoghan Baker U-48 kg & Kevin Balfe U-58 kg, while James Gamble, St, Declan’s NS, Ashbourne, beat Andrea Walsh, Laragh NS, Cavan to take the Heavyweight title.

Úna Dowling, Drumcondra deservedly received the ‘Female Player of the Day’ title in the tough U-31 kg, U-10 years category for her courage, skill and determination.

A special word of thanks must go to Shane & Jason Fitzpatrick who manned the table all day & to referees David Kane & Adrian Boyle who presided very fairly over the entire competition.

Congratulations to all!
