Dublin School’s Team Judo Championships 2005

Synge St. CBS retained both their Senior & Junior Team titles at the Annual School’s Team Judo Championships held in Plunket College, Whitehall. The Senior Team including Lee Carey, Richard Collins, Shaoibe Kahn & Shariful Alam Whitewashed Coolmine Community College & High School, Rathgar in their pool, to set up a semi-final with Belvedere College, who they defeated 4:1, for a final place against the hosts, Plunket College. Plunket College defeated Belvedere & St. Josephs CBS, Fairview, each by 3:2, before defeating the High School in the semis 4:1. The all action final was fought in the true competitive spirit, with Synge St. winning through 3:2 to retain their title.

Synge St. Junior Team lost their first pool match 3:2 to St. David’s CBS, Artane, captained by Karl Doyle. Then both defeated Cavan VEC to pass through to the semi-finals. In the other pool, Rosmini defeated both Plunket College & Castleknock Community College to set up a semi-final with Synge St. Both St. David’s & Synge St. won through for a re-match in the final, with Synge St. coming out on top this time.
The girls Event proved a super competition, with the High School, Coolmine & Castleknock Community Colleges, all taking part for the very first time. In the first match Castleknock whitewashed Coolmine, with team captain Christina Kelly, Emma Gill & Danielle Mongey all winning their matches by Ippon. Next the High School defeated Coolmine 2:1 with Sarah Fox, Coolmine taking the points with her victory. This set up a great final between the High School & Castleknock. Nicola Canton drew first blood for the High School, defeating Emma Gill by Ippon. Next Christina Kelly, the Castleknock captain defeated Beth Kelly to set up the deciding match between Katie Jane Barry, High School & Danielle Mongey, Castleknock. This was a really close match going right down to the last minute, when Danielle scored a beautiful Ippon with ogoshi to take the title to Castleknock Community College for the very first time.
A special word of thanks must go to David O’Reilly & the staff of Plunket College who made their school available to all of us on the day. They were so pleased with the organisation of the event, they have offered to host the 2006 event on Monday, 08th May, which we were all delighted to accept.
