Philippine Judo Federation Report

Judo Ireland Coach, Alan Martin has spend much of the summer working with the Philippine Judo Federation National Squad in preparation for the upcoming South-East Asian Judo Championships which will take place in Vietnam at the end of September 2010.

Marian 1st time Champions!

Over 80 competitors, teachers, parents & coaches, travelled from 18 schools throughout Ireland to celebrate this year’s School’s Spring Judo Championships.
Marion College, Ballsbridge hosted the Dublin Spring Judo Championships which was celebrating its 10th anniversary. Rising to the occasion, the students & staff put on a terrific event, as well as putting forward their strongest ever team which proved the depth of talent among the students.

Cavan Open Judo Championships

A super entry of 142 competitors took part in a fantastic day of judo at the Cavan Sports Complex on Saturday, 16th April.

Competitors came from all over Ireland to compete for the titles. Many new players made their first impression on the Irish Judo scene at this year’s event, including Ryan Dolan, Celbridge Judo Club, who won all 5 of his fights by Ippon to win the U34 kg final and the title of Junior Male player of the day.

Marcella Creaven, Annaghdown Judo Club won the Junior Girl’s +57kg & Open titles as well as the Junior female player of the Day title.

The Junior Event threw up some fantastic Judo matches, including the finals of the +60kg & Open categories, which put Musa Tembulatov, Roscommon against Alfred Browne, Larkin College, Dublin. Alfred won the +60kg by referee’s decision after a 6-minute bout, including extra time. However, Musa took the Open title winning by Golden Score.

In the Youth section, Michael McKenna, DIT, showed his class once again, winning the U73kg & Open categories. In the senior event he also took silver in U73’s & Upper Kyu’s as well as bronze in the Open. Michael was also awarded ‘Youth Male Player of the Day’, while Katie Savage, Annaghdown took the ‘Youth Female Player of the Day’ title after winning the Open.

Another huge surprise was Shariful Alam, Synge St. CBS Judo Club, winning the U66kg title in fine style, beating a very competitive field.

In the first Senior event at the Cavan Open in nearly 20 years, Mark Montgomery, Moira Judo Club, was in great form winning the +90kg & Open categories, along with the ‘Senior Male Player of the Day’ title. Most of the other Senior titles went north with Jonathan Henry, Omagh, winning the Lower Kyu title, Geoff Leaney, Shensei, the Upper kyu’s, Barry Currie, Abbey winning at U81kg, while his clubmate Nigel Stewart won at U90kg. Frenchman, Stephan Lethuillier, TCD took the U73 title.
