Philippine Judo Federation Report

Judo Ireland Coach, Alan Martin has spend much of the summer working with the Philippine Judo Federation National Squad in preparation for the upcoming South-East Asian Judo Championships which will take place in Vietnam at the end of September 2010.

Marian 1st time Champions!

Over 80 competitors, teachers, parents & coaches, travelled from 18 schools throughout Ireland to celebrate this year’s School’s Spring Judo Championships.
Marion College, Ballsbridge hosted the Dublin Spring Judo Championships which was celebrating its 10th anniversary. Rising to the occasion, the students & staff put on a terrific event, as well as putting forward their strongest ever team which proved the depth of talent among the students.

Dublin School’s Spring Judo Championships 2005

14-year old, Chechnyan-born, Musa Tembulatova proved far too strong for all opponents, winning Gold in the Junior +66 kgs, Junior Open, Senior U90 kgs and Senior Open categories. This incredible young player from Roscommon CBS not only won 4 Individual Gold Medals, but also single-handedly won the ‘Best Overall School’ trophy. He also won the ‘Junior Player of the Day’ title, far exceeding all other players in the under-16 male category.

St. Patrick’s College, Cavan made a clean sweep in the U41 kgs category, with Daryl Dunne taking Gold ahead of Gavin McGovern. Stuart Wilson & Fionan Janowitz shared the Bronze. At U45 kg. novice Martin McDonagh, Cavan VEC ipponed all comers to take Gold, with Jamie Headon, St. Michaels taking Silver on home ground.

Despite losing his first match to Seán Smyth, Castleknock Community College, Adam Corcoran, Hartstown, proved far too strong for all others in the U60 kg category, beating Stefan Triffo, Synge st. CBS in the final. Seán came through to share Bronze with Anthony McDonagh, St. Enda’s, Galway. Meanwhile, Cathal Ó Fainín, Gaelcoláiste Reachrainn, Dublin won the U66 kg title ahead of his old rival Karl Doyle, St. David’s CBS.

In the Senior event, Fabio Viti, Pobalscoil Rosmini won his first school’s title at U60, while Shane Fitzpatrick, Ashbourne Community College, proved far too strong for Darragh Lawless, Blakestown Community College, despite losing to Darragh in the first pool match. This title also won Shane the Senior ‘Male Player of the Day’ title.

Home players Scott O’Farrell and Hugo Boylan, St. Michael’s won at U73 & +90 kg.

Marcella Creaven, Presentation Headford, won both Junior & Senior U57 kg titles and the Junior ‘Female Player of the Day’ trophy, while Christina Kelly, Castleknock Community College, won the Junior U48 & Senior U52 kg title & Silver in the Junior Open losing out to school-mate Danielle Mongey.

In the other Junior Girl finals, Amy Harlow, Convent of Mercy, Roscommon, won at U44 kgs, while her twin Megan won silver at U48 kg. Aisling Kelly, Presentation won at U52 kg, while Michelle McDonald, Ashbourne Community College beat Niamh Hanley, Loreto Cavan to take the O57 kg. Title.

In the Senior competition, Aisling Fetherstone, Convent of Mercy, Roscommon won both the +63’s & the Open beating Gwen Farrell, Muckross College, Donnybrook in both finals. She was also awarded the Senior Female ‘Player of the Day’ for her efforts.

All had a super day of judo, and it was all thanks to the hard work & support of the staff & students of St. Michaels College who made it all possible.
