Ippon Seoi-Nage

Uke Changes the attack here to an aggressive downward strike to the top of Tori’s head, which Tori blocks, steps in and lowers his body, to effectively use the momentum generated by the attack to throw Uke over his back and shoulder. This technique is the first of four in the Nage No Kata where Uke strikes a blow at Tori, as clearly shows the self defence aspect is inherent in the Kata.

Ippon Seoi-Nage steps 1 - 3
Ippon Seoi-Nage steps 4 -6

Uke faces Tori at the far position with intent to attack. Uke takes two steps forward with alternate feet, while attempting to strike the top of Tori’s head with the bottom of his fist.

Tori foils Uke by taking one step forward to meet the attack and deflect the intending blow. Tori utilises Uke’s forward motion by turning underneath him and throwing him over his shoulder with continuous pulling upwards springing of his legs.

As Uke breakfalls, Tori retains his left hand grip to assist Uke with his ukemi and Tori exhibits zanshin. They then take one step backwards and repeat on left side.
