Galway Judo Club Open Judo Championships 2005
The Galway Open Judo Championships, which is this year celebrating 30 years was held in the Galway Tennis Club, right in the centre of the holiday resort of Salthill.
Once again, Players & clubs travelled from all over Ireland to take place in this, one of the premier events on the Irish Judo Calendar.
Yan Grangien, GMIT was a very convincing winner of the lower Kyu section, throwing Niall Clancy, DIT for Ippon to win the title. At Middle Kyu Michael McKenna, DIT proved too strong for all comers to take this title.

Gareth McNamara, DIT beating his clubmate Patrick Lindstrom into second place, won the Upper Kyu title. Gerry Hanley, Roscommon took bronze.
In the youth competition, Dave Kane, St. Josephs CBS, Dublin threw Máirtin Nee, Jes, Galway, with a magnificent Harai-goshi to win the U-66 kg title, while Chechnya-born, Muse Tombulayova, Roscommon threw Michael McKenna, DIT for Ippon at U-73 kg.
In the women’s section Sarah McGillacuddy, UCC proved too strong for Aisling Fetherstone, Roscommon to take the Open title.

Liam Beechiner, Ballincollig, had his revenge on Michael McKenna at men’s U-73 kg, who took bronze behind his teammate, Patrick Lindstrom. Florian Schufgier, UCC was in superb form winning the U-81 kg & the ‘Player of the Day’ title in the process. Lithuanian, Taclas, Ennis, won a tremendous match with Charles Van Wonterghem, Ballincollig to take the U-90 kg title, while veteran Alan Martin, DIT, came out of retirement to take the U-100 kg title.
The Team Event was a really exciting climax to the day, with Ballincollig squaring up to DIT in the final. Liam Beechiner drew first blood for Ballincollig throwing Patrick Lindstrom for Ippon. Stephen Mohally won the match for Ballincollig holding Gerry Hanley for 25 seconds.
In the final match Alan Martin, DIT proved too experienced for Charles Van Wonterghem, who led throughout the match until he had his hold-down reversed.
At the prize giving a special ‘Coach of the Decade’ award was made to Kieran Earls, Limerick for a lifetime of service to Judo.
