Irish Students Sports Association Competition 2005

This was the first time DIT have hosted this annual Tournament & the new mat area in the Kevin Street gym was the venue.

With over 40 individual participants & six teams, this was the biggest ISSA Judo Championships for many years, wit players from DIT, WIT, Garda College, Coláiste Dulaigh, Dunlaoghaire College of Art & Design & TCD taking part.

Jason Flynn, WIT led the way winning 5 fights by Ippon to win the lower Kyu section. At Middle Kyu Mark McCarthy proved too strong for teammate Michael McKenna to take this title.

The Upper Kyu competition proved a very close affair, with both Gareth McNamara, DIT & Conor Flanagan, TCD finishing on 2 wins & 20 points each, the result went Gareth’s way for faster times. Gareth also went on to beat Conor into 2nd place in the U-90 kg section.

Declan Kelly, DIT won his very first title at U-66kg, while Michael McKenna, DIT retained his U-73 kg title, which he won in Galway last year. Seán Davitt, WIT proved too strong for Kevin Lally, TCD in the U-81 kg final, where he bet Kevin with Kesa-Gatame.

In the women’s section Sara McGealy, DIT once again beat her great rival Jenny Dwyer, TCD to take the Open title, having beaten Jenny in the final of the Irish Intervarsities only a few weeks ago. Orla Quinlan fought well to take a deserved bronze in the same event.

The Team Event was a really exciting climax to the day, with DIT2 beating the Garda College in the first quarterfinal & TCD beating WIT2 in the other. DIT1 beat TCD in the first semi-finals, with WIT1 beating DIT2 in the other, setting up a re-run of last year’s final. Michael McKenna, DIT1 threw Gary Widger, WIT1 for Ippon in the first match, then Seán Davitt levelled the match throwing Patrick Lindstrom for Ippon. This set up a great last match between the 2 heavyweights, with Gareth McNamara, DIT throwing Jason Flynn-Wall for 10 to retain the team title for DIT.

At the prize giving dinner in the local Solas restaurant, it was decided that WIT will host next year’s event. Special thanks must go to Jessie Ho, DIT for organising & running this year’s event so well. She organised every detail from the entries right through to the dinner.
