Uki Otoshi
Uki Otoshi
Here Uke, having no prior experience with Tori,
starts with a very aggressive attack by grasping
Tori’s jacket and pushing Tori backwards. Tori responds
by stepping backward demonstrating the principle
of yielding, and pulling Uke forward culminating
in the throw. This throw exemplifies the beauty
and dynamic precision of the forces that can unbalance
an opponent and cause his body to trace a long arc
in the air as he is snapped forward, off his feet,
be the downwards drawing power of the thrower’s
body transmitted through his arms.

Uke takes the near position with intent to attack
and initiates attack by griping and pushing forward.
Tori keeps his balance, and tries to break Uke’s balance
by moving backwards twice.
Having twice failed to break Uke’s balance, Tori
changes and takes the attack initiative. Instead
of taking normal-length steps, he takes his left
foot a double length step backward, going directly
onto his knee which is placed on a line straight
back from his right heel. The toes of his left foot
are flexed. His left leg is about 45° to the axis
of movement.
He throws Uke by a strong, diagonal downward snap
pull of both hands. Tori keeps his left-hand grip
on Uke’s right sleeve, his right hand is placed
near his left hand.
As Uke breakfalls, Tori shows zanshin. They then
take one step backwards and repeat on left side.
